10 Honest Tips for an Unforgettable New Zealand Road Trip

Vanlife New Zealand: Our 10 Survival Tips for the Perfect Road Trip

If you've ever dreamt of driving through New Zealand with the windows down, the salty wind in your hair, and breathtaking views around every bend: Yes, it's just as magical in reality as it sounds! But life in a van, chasing the next adventure, isn't just about picturesque sunsets and the ultimate feeling of freedom. A little planning often makes all the difference between a smooth trip and a moment where you think: "If only we had known that before!"

After countless kilometers during our own 8 weeks in a van on the North Island, we've learned a lot. Here are our 10 ultimate tips that are guaranteed to make your Kiwi road trip unforgettable – and a whole lot more relaxed.

1. Keep daily essentials handy 🎒

You don't want to turn your van upside down every time just to find your toothpaste in the dark. Important clothes, toiletries, snacks, and yes, even your evening drink, should always be within easy reach. You'll be extremely grateful to yourself when it's cold in the evening and all you want to do is collapse into bed.

2. Store the "sometimes-stuff" well ⛺

Large backpacks, the spare tent, or thick sleeping bags? Those go into the harder-to-reach corners under the bed. Strictly reserve the best and most easily accessible storage space for the things you really need every day.

3. Tidy up a little every day 🧹

In such a small space, a little clutter can quickly feel like total chaos. Take a few minutes each day to put things back in their place and quickly sweep the floor. This makes van life so much more mentally pleasant!

4. Plan space for good food 🥑

Don't underestimate how much space fresh fruit, vegetables, and cooking utensils require. Cooking for yourself is always worthwhile on a road trip: It's significantly cheaper, healthier, and a thousand times better than living off gas station pies for weeks (as tempting as they may seem at first).

5. Bring a spice rack 🧂

A small spice rack or a well-stocked spice box can completely transform your simple camping meals. It also looks cute and keeps the small kitchen tidy. Who says van life food has to taste boring?

6. Pack fairy lights ✨

Fairy lights mean instant coziness. They are extremely practical as a soft light for evenings in the van, but also pure magic when you've parked with the tailgate open directly under the New Zealand starry sky.

7. Get blackout curtains 🌙

Trust us on this: You'll sleep so much better! Whether you're forced to park next to a streetlamp or on a busy campsite – good blackout curtains give you the necessary privacy and the feeling of truly being able to relax in your own little space.

8. Have jump leads with you 🚗

Dead batteries happen faster than you think (keyword: left the fairy lights on too long!). Jump leads can save your trip – and your mood – at the crucial moment. Being well prepared means less panic when you're in the middle of nowhere.

9. Always look under the van 👀

Before you start the engine and drive off, take a quick look under and around the vehicle. You'd be surprised what ends up there and gets forgotten. For example, the wet shoes from the day before. Not that we're speaking from personal experience here... (okay, we are!).

10. Shower at the public swimming pool 🚿

One of the best backpacker hacks ever: Public swimming pools (Aquatic Centres) in New Zealand usually have sparkling clean, hot showers that you can use for very little money. An absolute dream after a long, muddy hike or a salty day at the beach!

A road trip through New Zealand is pure magic. Mountains, beaches, ancient forests, and everything in between. It's precisely these small conveniences and clever habits that truly make your journey stress-free. To smooth roads, epic views, and always a little sand in your shoes!
