10 Honest Tips for an Unforgettable New Zealand Road Trip

Anyone who has dreamed of driving through New Zealand with the window down, wind in their hair, and breathtaking views around every bend: Yes, it’s just as magical as it sounds. But life in a van (or car) chasing adventure isn't just sunsets and freedom. A little planning makes all the difference between a smooth trip and one where you wish you had thought things through better beforehand.
After many miles and a few "we wish we had known that earlier" moments, here are our 10 tips to make your Kiwi road trip truly unforgettable.
1. Keep daily essentials within reach
You don't want to rummage through all your bags just to find your toothpaste. Clothes, toiletries, snacks, and yes, even a bottle of wine, should always be within reach. You'll thank yourselves when it's dark, cold, and you're just tired.
2. Stow away the "sometimes stuff"
Backpacks, tent, sleeping bags? Those go into the harder-to-reach corners. Reserve the best storage space for the things you really need every day.
3. Tidy up a little every day
In a small space, a little clutter quickly feels like total chaos. A few minutes a day, putting things back in their place, sweeping the floor briefly. That makes van life much more pleasant.
4. Plan space for good food
Don't underestimate how much space fresh fruit, vegetables, and cooking utensils need. Cooking for yourself is worth it: cheaper, healthier, and a thousand times better than living on gas station pies. As tempting as they may be.
5. Bring a spice rack
A small spice rack or box can completely transform your camping meals. It also looks cute and keeps everything tidy. Who says van life food has to be boring?
6. Pack fairy lights
Fairy lights = instant cozy atmosphere. Practical as light for the evening, but also simply magical when you're parked under a New Zealand starry sky.
7. Get blackout curtains
Trust us: you'll sleep so much better. Whether next to a streetlamp or in a busy campsite, blackout curtains give you privacy and the feeling of truly being able to relax.
8. Have jumper cables with you
Dead batteries happen. Jumper cables can save your trip and your mood along with it. Being prepared means less panic.
9. Always look under the van
Before you drive off, quickly check under the vehicle. You'd be surprised what ends up there. For example, shoes. Not that I'm speaking from personal experience... (okay, I am).
10. Shower at the public swimming pool
One of the best hacks: Public swimming pools usually have clean, hot showers for little money. Perfect after a long hike or a day at the beach.
A road trip through New Zealand is pure magic. Mountains, beaches, forests, and everything in between. But it's the small conveniences and clever habits that make the journey truly stress-free and unforgettable. To smooth roads, epic views, and perhaps a little sand in your shoes. Take Care!
