Hidden Gems on New Zealand's North Island

New Zealand's North Island: 7 Magical Places Beyond the Postcard Motifs

They always say: a picture is worth a thousand words. But after our week-long road trip through New Zealand's North Island, we sat in front of some 6,000 photos and still felt like we had barely captured the true magic of this place. Every click certainly captured a beautiful moment – misty mornings, wild coasts, and small wonders that surprised us precisely when we weren't even looking for them – but the real feeling is hard to photograph.

Instead of letting these moments gather dust in a digital photo album, we're sharing our very personal map of the places that stole our hearts. From hot springs in the middle of the forest to secret caves we crawled through barefoot: this is the North Island we fell madly in love with. Grab a tea, get comfortable, and come with us on a journey of discovery!

🌿 Kerosene Creek – New Zealand's Own Hot Tub

Imagine this: a steaming, crystal-clear stream gently winding through a lush green fern forest, warm enough to sink into like a home bathtub. That's Kerosene Creek. And the best part? It's completely free. We spent hours here, toes in the warm water, deep in conversation with locals. Their tip (and ours too): be sure to take your trash with you so that this piece of paradise remains as untouched for everyone.

🔦 Abbey Caves – Into the Underground

If you're looking for a bit of real adventure, you'll love Abbey Caves. We only ended up there thanks to an incredibly kind Couchsurfing host who picked us up while hitchhiking. So: shoes off, flashlights on, and wade through the cool water in the winding limestone tunnels! It felt like entering a completely different world. And the best part: we had the stalactite caves all to ourselves.

⛰ Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve – Colors from Above

We discovered this magical place purely by chance, just driving by. A short climb through the bush led us to a viewpoint that revealed two glowing crater lakes – like turquoise jewels nestled in the landscape. If you have more time and energy, you can hike further to the summit and enjoy a 360° panorama. We didn't make it all the way to the top, but honestly, even the short walk to the first lookout felt like a little secret we had discovered all to ourselves.

🌅 East Cape Lighthouse – The First Glimpse of the Sun

The East Cape Lighthouse marks the easternmost point of New Zealand. And hardly any tourists drive there. That's exactly what makes it so incredibly special! The gravel road there is long, bumpy, and absolutely silent. On the way, we only encountered wild horses and not a single tour bus. When we finally climbed the many steps to the top and looked out at the ocean, we truly felt like we were at the end of the world.

🌊 Castle Point Lighthouse – A Postcard Motif Comes to Life

When we reached Castle Point, we had already seen several lighthouses on our journey. But this one? Pure magic. Located directly on the rugged coast, with a long wooden walkway leading majestically up to it, it looked as if it had stepped right out of an expensive travel brochure. We squeezed out of our warm van long before sunrise to watch the first light appear over the horizon. Every single sleepy step in the cold was worth it.

🪶 Rotokare Scenic Reserve – The Sanctuary of Birdsong

Rotokare is a place where you automatically slow down and speak more softly. It is a predator-proof sanctuary where native birds can live exactly as they should: wild, curious, and completely unafraid. We strolled through the paths for hours, listened to the intense bird concert, and discovered species we had never seen before. It is a deep silence and peacefulness that only absolutely untouched nature can bestow.

💦 Tokaanu Thermal Pools – The Perfect End to the Day

Near the huge Lake Taupo, we found the ultimate way to end a long day of discovery: the Tokaanu Thermal Pools. Pleasantly warm, wonderfully mineral-rich, and completely surrounded by deep greenery. It feels like a deep, relieved sigh in water form. When we got out, we felt weightless, endlessly happy, and more than a little tempted to just stay there forever.

The North Island is full of places that might not make it onto typical souvenir postcards, but will forever remain in your heart. These places remind us every day why New Zealand feels like pure magic.

It is precisely this magic, the deep connection to nature, and the sound of the ocean that we try to capture in every single piece of jewelry from Salty Dreamers today.

So pack your bags, grab your loved ones, and hit the road. Out here, nature whispers at every turn: "Kia ora!"
