Hidden Gems on New Zealand's North Island
Share
A picture is worth a thousand words, they say. But after two months road-tripping through New Zealand's North Island, we had around 6,000 photos and felt like we had barely captured the magic of this place. Every click recorded a moment: misty mornings, wild coastlines, small wonders that surprised us precisely when we weren't looking for them.
Instead of letting these moments gather dust in a photo album, we're sharing our personal map of the places that stole our hearts. From hot springs by the river to secret caves we crawled through barefoot. This is the North Island we fell in love with. Grab a cup of tea, get comfy, and join us on a journey of discovery.
🌿 Kerosene Creek – New Zealand's Own Hot Tub
Imagine: a steaming, crystal-clear stream winding through lush green forest, warm enough to sink into like a bathtub. That's Kerosene Creek. And the best part? It's free. We spent hours here, toes in the water, chatting with locals who told us how much this place has changed. Their tip (and ours): take your trash with you so this piece of paradise remains beautiful for everyone.
🔦 Abbey Caves – Into the Underground
If you're looking for a bit of adventure, you'll love Abbey Caves. We ended up there thanks to a kind Couchsurfing host who picked us up while hitchhiking. Shoes off, flashlights on, wading through cool water in winding limestone tunnels. It felt like entering another world. And the very best part: We had the caves all to ourselves.
⛰ Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve – Colors from Above
We discovered this place by chance, just driving. A short ascent led us to a viewpoint over two luminous crater lakes, like turquoise jewels in the middle of the bush. If you have more time and energy, you can hike further to the summit and enjoy a 360° panorama. We didn't make it, but honestly, even the short walk to the viewpoint felt like a little secret we discovered all on our own.
🌅 East Cape Lighthouse – The First Glimpse of the Sun
The East Cape Lighthouse marks New Zealand's easternmost point. And hardly anyone drives there. That's precisely what makes it so special. The road there is long, bumpy, and quiet. Along the way, we encountered wild horses, not a single tour bus. When we finally climbed the steps to the top, we felt like we were at the end of the world.
🌊 Castle Point Lighthouse – A Postcard Scene Brought to Life
By the time we reached Castle Point Lighthouse, we had already seen a few lighthouses. But this one? Pure magic. Right on the coast, with a wooden walkway leading up to it, it looked like it had fallen right out of a travel brochure. We dragged ourselves out of bed before sunrise to watch the light rise over the horizon. Every sleepy step was worth it.
🪶 Rotokare Scenic Reserve – Sanctuary of Birdsong
Rotokare is the kind of place where you automatically slow down. A predator-free sanctuary where native birds live exactly as they should: wild, curious, and fearless. We ambled through the paths, listened to the bird concert, and spotted species we had never seen before. A silence that only untouched nature can provide.
💦 Tokaanu Thermal Pools – The Perfect End
Near Lake Taupo, we found the ultimate way to end a long day (or a long journey): the Tokaanu Thermal Pools. Warm, mineral-rich, surrounded by greenery. Like a deep sigh in liquid form. We emerged feeling weightless, happy, and more than a little tempted to just stay forever.
The North Island is full of places that don't make it onto postcards but remain in your heart for a long time. From the warmth of Kerosene Creek to the mystery of Abbey Caves, from rainbow-colored lakes to wind-swept lighthouses. These places remind you why New Zealand feels like pure magic.
So pack your bags, grab your loved ones, and hit the road. Out here, nature whispers at every turn: "Kia ora"
