What is a paua shell?

Much of our jewelry is made from the beautiful Paua shell. This fascinating shell belongs to the abalone family and is found exclusively on the coasts of New Zealand. Strictly speaking, the Paua shell is actually a sea snail. These snails live on rocks and feed on algae. The holes in the shell have several functions: they are used for breathing, reproduction, and excretion.

New Zealand waters are known for their exceptional water quality and high mineral content. It is precisely these minerals that give the Paua shell its intense color and remarkable shell thickness.

Paua shell from New Zealand

As the Paua shell is found only in this part of the world, strict rules apply to its harvesting to protect stocks and ensure sustainability. It may only be harvested using traditional freediving methods. The use of diving equipment is strictly forbidden.

The name "Paua" comes from the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. For the Māori, the meat of the shell is a true delicacy and part of their tradition.

The main reason for harvesting the Paua shell is its meat. The shell itself is a byproduct. Without further use, it would simply be discarded. So, anyone who buys a piece of Paua shell jewelry helps to ensure that nothing goes to waste.
